Germany warns Ankara of ‘provocation’ in eastern Mediterranean

Ankara should refrain from any provocation in an eastern Mediterranean gas dispute, Germany Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Tuesday, adding that Germany stands in solidarity with Cyprus and Greece as EU partners. “Ankara must end the interaction between detente and provocation if the government is interested in talks as it has repeatedly asserted,” Maas said in Berlin before his flight to Cyprus and Greece.

He called on Turkey to remain open to talks and called on Ankara not to resume gas exploration in the most controversial sea areas. A Turkish ship set sail on Monday to conduct seismic surveys in the eastern Mediterranean, prompting Greece to issue a furious new demand for European Union sanctions against Ankara for offshore exploration rights .
