THE UNITED NATIONS CALLS ON GREECE TO TAKE URGENT MEASURES REGARDING ASYLUM SEEKERS

 

The united Nations High commissionner for refugees called on Athens to take”very urgent” steps regarding the living conditions of asylum seekers on the Greek mainland and Aegean Islands.This came in a joint statement on Friday by Deputy High Commissionner for Protection Affairs Gillian Triggs and Rauf Mazu,regarding their 4-day visit to Greece.

The statement indicated that there are serious gaps and problems related to the living conditions of Asylum Seekers in Greece,calling on Athens to take very urgent steps.She added that more than a million migrants and asylum seekers have arrived in Europe via Greece since 2015,noting a significant decrease in transit operations in the past five years.

The commission called on the Greek authorities to improve the living conditions of these people very urgently and to reduce overcrowding in reception centers of the islands.
