UNHCR : misunderstanding between the Migration Ministry and the Greek branch of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR

A war of words is seen between the Migration Ministry and the Greek branch of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) following criticism from a senior agency official over a temporary reception center for migrants on the island of Lesvos, in the eastern Aegean Sea. UNHCR spokesperson Shabia Mantoo called for “urgent action and improvements to prevent further deterioration of living conditions” for the approximately 7,800 migrants living in the Kara Tepe camp , last week in Geneva.

Mantoo highlighted “critical gaps in drainage, water, sanitation, hygiene and health services” as well as “dangers and safety risks” are observed. A ministry official said the facility could be flawed after it was hastily put in place after the Moria facility was destroyed last month, but accused the agency of “damaging policies And not keep its “repeated commitments” to infrastructure improvements.
