Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Wednesday that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s “successful” visit to Greece would strengthen the country’s position ahead of the EU Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.
“This is where Turkey’s behavior will be carefully considered and I hope the message to Ankara will be perfectly clear: unilateral actions cause side effects, aggressive actions generate an in-kind response,” Mitsotakis said.
“The provocations must stop for the talks to begin,” he said.
Mitsotakis for his part welcomed the remarks of Pompeo who described Greece as a “pillar of stability” in the region of “very important at the diplomatic level”.
“Let’s not forget that Pompeo also visited Cyprus a few days ago. I think it has become very clear that the United States has vital interests in the Eastern Mediterranean which they are not prepared to give up, ”he said.
Referring to Pompeo’s announcement that the US Naval Base at Souda Bay in Crete would become the headquarters of the US Expeditionary Maritime Base, USS Hershel “Woody” Williams, the Greek Prime Minister said the decision “speaks volumes” about the future of Greece-US defense cooperation.
